Reina is almost always kindly smiling, sometimes her smile looking almost fake. - Goals:
Be strong enough to not need a guard Become a Jounin Find a 'best friend' To be a valuable medical ninja To be wise and strong enough to lead the Hyuuga
Background- Age Seven... Reina; the Heir.:
Age Seven... Reina; the Heir.
A young girl sat motionless in the tranquil forest. Her dark, neat hair, was folded neatly in a plait down her back, tucked away from her soft face. She felt the presence of her surroundings; the sounds of a gentle breeze through the forest stirring insects and wildlife, the mugginess in the air from a recent rain, the smell of damp earth and moss, even the taste of her own saliva which still held the slight hint of berries she'd eaten earlier. She felt only the presence around her, forgetting herself. This certainly was training, though not routine. This was a newer rendition for Reina Hyuuga.
Reina's Hyuuga blood gave her an absolute power in her sense of sight. In fact, she could see better than most members in her clan. It was a natural gift for her as the Heir to the Hyuuga clan. She had the utmost control over her vision and was praised highly for her talent within the clan. Her sight was definitely her greatest asset, which is why she was terrified of the thought of losing it. She trained every day so that she didn't have to be so reliant on her sight.
Reina felt the closing presence of a being approach. Her eyes snapped open as she recalled herself. "Kaku?" She asked without looking. "Yes, Hime-sama". A boy's voice answered in response. Reina sighed softly and pushed herself to her feet. Once she brushed herself off, she turned to face her older cousin. "Why do you always have to follow me?" Reina asked, unintentially allowing herself to become annoyed.
"Because you are the Hime-sama, and you must be protected at all times." Kaku replied to her, his head somewhat bowed. "Stop calling me that!" Reina crossed her arms in a huff. Her cousin was only eleven. Kaku had dark hair, similar to Reina's, however was much taller, and had a much sturdier build. "I must address you as you are... I'm sorry." He bowed. "Your father would like to see you." Kaku said, head still bowed.
Reina pushed past him without a word, heading towards the compound. She didn't like the formal way he spoke to her. It was a new habit to Kaku, a recent one he was taught. Although she was angry, it was mostly sadness she felt. The two grew up together, played with each other, and fought against one another.
As Reina entered the Hyuuga compound, she made her way to the audience chambers where she knew her father would be. She was not surprised when she saw her father, Takahiro, dressed in a formal kimono, sitting on a Zabuton while wearing an emotionless expression. Reina silently made her way to the center of the room and seated herself infront of her father.
"You asked for me, father?" Reina spoke in a soft voice.
"I did." Takahiro replied. Although a loving father, he was always stern, no matter the circumstances. That is how Reina always remembered him. "I've noticed your training habits. Although admirable, you cannot forget the true strength of a Hyuuga."
"Yes father. I haven't forgotten." Reina responded.
"Tell me." Takahiro asked.
"The Byakugan." Reina responded again.
"That's correct." Takahiro sat forward. "Our Byakugan. With it we see all. We excel in combat without missing a thing. It gives us strength. That's why you should be focusing on developing your Byakugan." He lectured her unyieldingly.
"But what if something happens and I can no longer use Byakugan?" Reina asks, trying to keep her emotion in check.
"It won't. You are always protected. Remember that. Your cousin Kaku will grow to be your guardian." Takahiro replied, his voice in the same monotone.
A moment dragged on before Takahiro spoke again. "I want you to fight Kaku."
Reina blinked in surprise. "Fight Kaku? Why?" She asked.
"Your place is not to ask. Not yet. Do as I say. Kaku. Enter." He commanded.
The door slid open as Kaku walked in, not letting a second pass by.
"You two are to fight. Do you understand?" Takahiro asked.
"Yes." Kaku responded immediately.
"Fine." Reina sighed.
The two stood and bowed, as they would do in most training battles. They entered their battle stances, Reina reluctantly readying herself. It was well known that Reina's strength surpassed most other young Hyuuga.
"No." Takahiro interrupted them. "Eyes closed, Reina."
Reina stared at her father in disbelief. "But-"
"Eyes closed, Reina." He commanded again.
Reina did as she was told and closed her eyes. She tried to focus on her surroundings using her other senses. Although it seemed so easy in the calm environment of the forest, she couldn't feel Kaku's presence at all.
"Begin." Her father commanded.
Reina immediately recoiled as a hand slammed against her shoulder. She winces and backed away in a panic. She hadn't heard Kaku approach at all.
"Again." Her father called out.
And again she felt a blow against her, this time to her stomach. Reina backed off further, knowing the wall wouldn't be too far behind her.
"Again!" She heard her father's command, his voice seeming more icy by the second.
Reina instinctively moved to parry, and felt her hands brush off an attack. Her surprise was short-lived, however, as a second blow landed on the back of her leg. She fell forward onto her hands and knees.
"Stop."
Reina balled her hands into fists as she pushed herself to her feet, fighting the urge to shout at her father.
"It may seem harsh, Reina." Her father was standing in front of her, though she didn't see him approach. "But know that my lessons are taught from love." He said in a very unloving tone. "You will one day lead in my place. It won't be for many years, but it will happen. You need to be prepared. You need to have strength. You need to develop your Byakugan."
"Yes, father."
- Age Eleven... To be a Hyuuga:
Age Eleven... To be a Hyuuga
A slender girl with long dark hair walked through the forest, her eyes pale white and somewhat focused. She carried herself with grace, barely making a sound. Closely following was a tall boy with a strong build and similar attributes, although not nearly as graceful.
Reina had spent the last few years in the Hyuuga compound learning of the clan, villages, and the way of the ninja. Takahiro refused to allow her to enter the ninja academy as any other shinobi would. Reina needed to be taught properly, and the only way to know that she was being taught in such a way was to do it himself.
Reina stopped in her tracks and sighed softly. "I know you have to follow me, but do you have to be so close?" Reina wasn't allowed to leave the village alone. She had to have constant supervision, so Kaku would follow her. To be honest, Reina preferred to have Kaku follow her rather than some of the other Branch Hyuuga. He would at least be lenient. On that particular day, Reina wondered further than she had before.
"I just want to assure your safety, Hime-sama." Kaku's response had become even more robotic as the years passed. Reina tutted. "Please just... Stay out of earshot." Kaku hesitated, however complied. He slowed his pace as Reina proceeded, eventually disappearing behind her behind the trees.
Reina carried on ahead at a quicker rate, hoping to increase the distance between the two. She could hear Kaku hurry along in the distance behind her. He was not nearly as dexterous nor as fast as Reina was. She smiled to herself cruelly as she increased the pace into a run. She knew Kaku couldn't keep up.
After almost half an hour of running, the sound of Kaku's footsteps had completely disappeared behind her. It'd take a few minutes for him to catch up if she paused now. Although it wasn't much, freedom was foreign feeling to Reina. She slowed to a stop and smiled to herself. Reina inhaled deeply and closed her eyes. She could feel her surroundings. Life was much more present in the forests outside of the village. She could hear the birds chirp, leaves rustling in the wind, and something spinning through the air towards her.
Reina immediately threw herself to the side, narrowly avoiding a shuriken. It whizzed past her face, scratching her cheek. She raised a hand to her face and looked into the forest's depths on high alert. Byakugan Her eyes pulsed into focus. Her incredible sense of sight allowed Reina to immediately spot three strangers several hundreds of meters away. She had never seen anyone move so fast. Panic plagued her insides as she turned and sprinted back the way she came, her limbs numb and cold. She could see her Cousin ahead and the three strangers quickly approaching from behind. Remembering the basics of being a ninja, Reina pulled a package from her ninja pouch and dropped caltrops on the ground behind her in a desperate attempt to hinder the pursuers.
She could hear Kaku approach now and knew that he was aware of the situation. Similarly, the three were closing in on her. As she rounded a tree, Kaku came into view. She allowed herself the smallest sigh of relief as she sprinted towards him. Reina's stomach dropped as Kaku passed her and headed towards the attackers.
"No!" Reina shouted as she skidded to a halt.
"GO REINA!" He commanded. Reina hesitated. She had never been remotely close to a situation like this. She was scared.
"You can't-" Reina's sentence was cut short as a kunai shot through Kaku's shoulder.
"Kaku!" Reina screamed. As she ran forward towards Kaku, a sharp strike to the back of her head knocked her unconscious.
---
Reina awoke in a bed, her memory foggy and head spinning. She felt alarmed but didn't know why, and sat up with a start. The room was familiar, and she soon realised it was her own. Moments after awakening, her door slid open as a man walked in.
"Father..." Reina stared up at Takahiro in confusion.
"Reina. You're safe now." Her father replied in a rare, comforting tone.
- Age Twelve... Caged Bird:
Age Twelve... Caged Bird
Reina stared down into her lap where she tightly held her newly acquired headband, the leaf village symbol shining up on her face. Although finally earning her headband, she couldn't feel happy. She had always pictured herself graduating with Kaku, the two of them growing as ninja together. That was before Kaku changed. That was before Kaku was killed.
Reina felt her sadness well in her eyes, however blinked it away. She had to be strong. She was to be the head of the Hyuuga clan. She stood and tied her headband around her neck. She had spent the last year training intensely and studying further, not in the way of the ninja, but in the Hyuuga's lore. She left her room and entered the audience chamber to see her father. He was sat in his usual spot on the Zabuton. She sat quietly infront of him and bowed her head.
"Father." She said.
"Reina." Takahiro responded. His eyes focused on Reina, from the face, and then settling as a gaze on her headband. "You're a ninja now. I am proud." His voice was always hard.
"Thank you." Reina spoke back in her soft voice.
"It is not an easy life. You will face many difficulties, much like you did last year with Kaku." Reina tensed from her father's words. "I expect great things from you. However, until I am sure you are fully capable, you will remain under supervision." Takahiro said in a voice that offered no argument.
"Yes father..." Reina replied.
- Age Fifteen... She who will lead the Hyuuga:
Age Fifteen... She Who Will Lead
The Hyuuga named Reina had spent the last two years honing her skills as a shinobi while maintaining her balanced life in studies and court. After all, if she was to lead the Hyuuga, she would have to be as graceful and knowledgeable as she was powerful.
She sat at the desk in the Hyuuga private library with a book propped open. It was her free time which she spent the large majority of by reading medical books. She did aspire to be a medical kunoichi after all. Reina sat back in her chair and let out a dramatic sigh.
She had learnt a lot in the past year. She made many friends, was put in a squad, and had experienced ninja life. She had a boyfriend, Hiroshi, who she felt very fond of. Her newly assigned protector, Azumi, had grown on her, and Reina felt very fond of her too. Reina looked forward to the future, however always felt the concerned when she remembered that she will one day lead the Hyuuga.
She stood from her desk and made her way to the meeting hall, where she was to meet her father. Before entering the room, Reina made sure that her clothes were tidy and in order. As she entered the room, Reina took her usual place infront of her father after bowing.
"Father." Reina spoke firmly. Her voice had somewhat matured in the past couple years, as has her confidence in herself and the Hyuuga.
"Reina." Takahiro responded.
Reina then noticed the man behind her father. A tall bearded man with dark red hair. His face was scarred and his clothes, although clean and courtly, were somewhat worn. The man had piercing blue eyes and a hard face, one which showed many decades of war and hardship.
"You have noticed our guest." Takahiro spoke as Reina blinked, realising she had been distracted from her father.
"This is Katsuo-sama. He is a valued member of fire country and a retired shinobi." Her father spoke as the large man nodded his head in greeting.
"It's a pleasure to meet such a man of great status." Reina bowed her head in return.
"Katsuo-sama is to be your mentor in training. He has a great deal of knowledge that can be passed on to you." He spoke again before rising and leaving the room.
Reina stared after her father, whom to that day she had never seen leave before someone else.
"Reina-hime. It's my honour to teach you." Reina blinked as she looked back to Katsuo who was then sitting in front of her.
"I am Katsuo, the lion sage. I am to teach you everything I know. I hope you will be vigilant subject." He enormous man bowed his head once more.
"Lion.. sage?" Reina stared at him, evidently unsure of what he meant.
"Yes. That doesn't matter right now, however. My first lesson is in summoning techniques. This is a contract between the shinobi and an animal family. A permanent contract. the choice is yours." He watched Reina carefully.
..Reina nodded her head after some thought. "I am your student. Please let me sign the contract."
With that, Katsuo pulled the scroll from his back and unrolled it infront of Reina. She could see many signatures written in red with fingerprints beneath, some of the scroll looking extremely aged, yellow and cracked. Katsuo unrolled to a blank piece of scroll and moved it to Reina.
"You need to sign." He spoke in a gruff voice, his face almost as stern as her fathers.
Reina looked around then back at Katsuo, who she bowed apologetically to. "I have nothing to write with."
"It's a blood pact, Reina-hime. Please use the blood from your hand to sign, then spread the blood to each finger and give your finger prints. With that, the contract is done."
Reina hesitated, her eyes locked onto Katsuo. She then slowly raised a hand and bit into her thumb, spilling a stream of blood which she used to write on the scroll with. She then dabbed her fingers with the blood before giving her finger prints.
Katsuo rolled up the scroll and tucked it back over his neck. "With that... the contract is sealed."
